An NHS Comic Strip making PPE less scary for children
Last week, I got the following message on Instagram from Jayne Sutherland:
“Hi Katie. I am an anaesthetist working in a children’s hospital and we are having to put the kids to sleep wearing full protective masks which makes it super scary for them! I need someone to illustrate a little cartoon strip for us to help prepare them for what’s about to happen.”
I quickly made this illustrated comic strip - hopefully making the full face masks and PPE a bit less scary for children being treated by medical staff during the Corona Virus pandemic.
“We might look a bit different than usual. It’s ok to laugh!”
It is available in Welsh and English, and there are a few different versions. (High resolution PDF downloads with no logo available at the end of this blog post.)
So far the comic has made its way all around the world, and I am so glad it has been useful! Thank you for all the magical medical work you are doing.
Please download the high-resolution PDFs below and feel free to use in your medical place (hospital, theatre, wherever) where they might help put children at ease.
If you’d like to say thank you…
You can do so by clicking here. (Thank YOU!) It means a lot.

Thank you medical staff all around the world for everything you do. All the time, obvs, but especially now! Extra shout out to Jayne and her lovely colleagues for thinking of this concept.
