Graphic Recording Online - How Does it Work?
“...If you’ve got information and you want to turn it into pictures, graphic recording is perfect!”
Hit play to learn more about graphic recording, how it works for online (and in-person) events. We can work remotely for you wherever you are.
Hello!
My name is Katie Chappell and i'm a live event illustrator
I work mostly online turning meetings and events into pictures.
How I got started with graphic recording and live illustration
When I was really little my grandpa was a printer and he used to give me all the off-cuts of paper and he would like just give me a big stack of them and be like 'draw!' and I'd get my granny to quick fire different things to draw; my granny and grandpa, the dog, the room around us.
Education
I got a Masters degree in illustration from Edinburgh College of Art, and that was when I started my live illustration business. I work from a studio here - it's in Berwick Upon Tweed in the UK, and I have a global team that I work with remotely as well.
What is graphic recording and live illustration?
Basically, live illustration is capturing what's going on in visuals in real-time.
How does live illustration work remotely or for online events?
The way we do it is that we log into online events / online meetings, and you can see the illustration happening in real-time. So it kind of sucks everybody in, grabs attention. You and your attendees can see the illustration taking shape during the event!
At the end, you get an illustration and a time-lapse animation of the drawing. It can be applied to so many different uses, but I think if you've got information and you want to turn it into pictures live illustration is really helpful.
Here’s what you get after the event:
Here’s the kind of graphic recording / still image you’ll receive after your event…
…and here’s the kind of timelapse you’ll also receive once your event is finished. Magic! Hit play for a preview.
What are the benefits of graphic recording?
People are feeling a lot of zoom fatigue - they don't want to be in online meetings! But having a live illustrator means that you've got the visuals which are
more accessible,
easier and quicker to understand
engaging (you can beam the illustrations onto a big screen, have a live stream showing to all the online attendees etc.)
Graphic recording brings people together, gives them something memorable to look at.
What’s the booking process to hire a graphic recorder?
The process is usually somebody gets in touch, we send a quote, then we either discuss over email or hop on a call to talk about the event.
You can upload your different logos, your colour schemes that you'd like us to work in, book yourself into the calendar, we'll have a little tech rehearsal to make sure everything's working okay and that it looks how you want it to look and then it's the day of your event!
On the day of your event
We draw pictures, you get them immediately so you can see the images being drawn while the event's happening (if you want - we can keep them secret too if it’s a surprise!)
The final illustrations and timelapse video will be with you 15-30 minutes after the event ends.
Who have you graphic recorded for in the past?
We've worked with some big clients like Facebook, Google, Apple. We’ve also live illustrated at online events for small grassroots organizations that just want to get their message out there, and different charities as well like Oxfam, the NSPCC.
A global company based in the UK
The best thing about having this team spread around the world means that we can cover any time zone anywhere. We're a global company really, even though we're based in the Northeast of England. We feel really lucky that we get to do something that we love every day.
I feel on a gut level that like online events aren't going anywhere, hybrid working is here to stay and live illustration is here to help that!
The responses that we get from clients are brilliant. Helping people feel seen and heard is a really important part of live illustration capturing all of that in an image.
