Meet Addyson: Hear all about the fun of live illustration and how it sets you apart from the crowd

5 Questions with… Addyson!

Did you know there’s a small team of us here at Illustrated Live?!

Yep. We’re a very small but mighty group of remote live illustrators (plus a few other behind-the-scenes folks), and as of right now, we’re giving you a peep into the people behind the work!

This month we spoke to Addyson, our remote live illustrator who is based near Nottingham, and got the scoop on all things virtual scribing from their perspective! Let’s get into it…

1. How did you discover live event illustration?

I accidentally fell into it just before lockdown 2020 - for a Men’s Mental Health conference in Devon. Did it occasionally ‘til 2022 when I joined a creative agency that specialised in it, and started to develop more skills in live illustration until I felt ready to spread my freelance wings! (Thank you to lovely Katie and everyone else behind Illustrated Live who have supported and engaged in my live illustration career. )

Live illustration is an absolute JOY; to capture the magic of the day and the essence of the content is always incredibly satisfying. A well planned event is always rather meditative for me - I can listen and draw?! Sign me UP!

2. Tell us something you have learned about the benefits of live illustration since you became a live scribe.

I’ve learnt that there’s SO MUCH MORE out there than what I thought.

Through Illustrated Live I’ve illustrated for such a wide range of people - all of which I’d have never have worked with otherwise. The visuals can transform what could be a boring meeting into something exciting and worth discussing outside the meeting room.

The first scribe I did with Illustrated Live was for finance company PLEO, capturing the conversations during a breakfast. It took what could’ve been a small event into something memorable, that the participants spoke about post-event (I know because I hung around afterwards hehe).

3. What do you believe sets visual learning apart from other learning styles?

Aside from the usual stuff - you’re 60% more likely to remember stuff if it’s visual BLAH BLAH BLAH - it’s FUN!

It’s FUN to have someone there to act as the coffee filter between content and participant. It’s FUN to have a hard working image post-event to reflect on and utilise afterwards. And it’s FUN to watch how difficult topics are more easily digestible with just a few lines on a page.

In summary, it’s FUN!

4. Why do you think clients should choose live illustration for their next event?

I think my previous point answers these both - if you want people to remember you, your event, your conversation - having a live illustrator there sets YOU apart from the herd, and gets more eyes on YOUR message.

5. How would you describe live illustration in one word or one sentence?

SEXY! And fun. Sexy and fun.

Curious to see what remote live illustration could bring to your next event? We’d love to hear a bit more about what you’re planning and see whether we can help. Who knows… maybe Addyson will end up being your scribe!
