Two countries, one canvas: The art of collaboration in remote live illustration

Our live event illustration for our return client CAS (Casualty Actuarial Society) and their event - CAS Seminar on Reinsurance. The illustration is in shades of blue and yellow, summarising an expert-led discussion about becoming the founder of a reinsurance business.

We’re back on the return client train, and once again, we’re chuffed that people are CHOO-CHOOsing us more than once for their event visuals!

(Uh oh, bad pun alert… Quick! RUN to the next sentence and we’ll all be okay.)

This time, our return client was CAS (Casualty Actuarial Society) and their event was the CAS Seminar on Reinsurance.

The best bit about working with a repeat client is that the collaboration starts on an even shinier level. We already know each other, are familiar with our communication styles, and know exactly how to make the magic happen faster.

  • For us…
We’re more familiar with the subject matter and the flow.

  • For the client…
They trust how we interpret all of that stuff for their people.

As always, the process for this event began with our trusty pre-event questionnaire — the fun-looking form that lands in your inbox about a week before the big day. This is where we collect the essentials: your brand guidelines, your agenda, and anything else you feel we need so that we can illustrate your event in real time without missing a beat.

This time around, the prep went a smidge deeper. Because this client had already experienced the power of live illustration in action with us a few times before, they sent us not just the usual materials, but also a goldmine of insider intel — a glossary of acronyms for us to be clued-up on, and a list of specific topics and questions they expected to be covered during the event.

Armed with this knowledge, we were able to tune in from across the world with a head start, recognising what mattered most in an instant.

The unexpected benefit of involving a live illustrator

Even while equipped with that pre-event questionnaire and a pre-established relationship, you might still wonder how it’s possible for a live illustrator to handle complex subject matters when they are not a living, breathing part of your organisation.

You might think you need an illustrator who’s steeped in your line of work, but here’s the plot twist: it’s better if we’re not!

Let’s think of it like cooking a delicious meal…

  • You provide the rich ingredients -
The facts, the insights, the terminology and the nitty-gritty stuff that only you know how to provide. Then you pop it onto the pre-event form, which is like our recipe card.

  • We are the chefs who turn it all into a yummy dish anyone can enjoy -
We don’t have to know how to grow the tomatoes to make a fantastic pasta sauce. In the same way, we don’t need to be experts in your line of work to translate your messages into pictures that are deliciously easy for the eyeballs and delicious for the brain.

There’s a reason people come back to us for events like this, and it’s not just because we’re proper nice and have swanky handwriting. It’s because this stuff really does work.

I loved working with you all again, you are all very professional and flexible, and you make great work!

Valid visuals for any audience

Chances are, the audience at your event is REALLY diverse, and from person to person, there will always be different levels of understanding of a particular topic (and this is FINE).

This means that a visual approach is ideal, because it makes broad concepts feel much more bite-sized and approachable, and helps you all to sing from the same sheet.

Maybe there are new hires tuning in, or people who process information in different ways to you. Perhaps some people may not be fully switched on for whatever reason because their brains are full of other things on the day, orrrr people who are fully engaged but hadn’t considered things from the perspective that the illustrations depict.

Having us attend your event is quite a flex, if we do say so ourselves! *wiggles hips from side to side and smirks*

Stuff looking good on a big screen is a perk, but the real highlight of live illustration at an event is that everything feels approachable and memorable for every single person in the room.

And it can be made even better when we work together before the event to make sure all of the key ingredients are ready.

YUM.

If this sounds like your cup of tea and you have an event coming up, why not have a chat with us about it? We can do the thinggggs for you!
