Meet B: How live illustration serves as the ultimate visual roadmap

5 Questions with… B!

Did you know there’s a small team of us here at Illustrated Live?!

Yep. We’re a very small but mighty group of remote live illustrators (plus a few other behind-the-scenes folks), and as of right now, we’re giving you a peek into the people behind the work!

This month we spoke to Berwyn, aka B, our remote live illustrator who is based near Nottingham, and got the scoop on all things virtual scribing from their perspective! Let’s get into it…

1. How did you discover live event illustration?

In my last year of university (studying illustration), my tutor Gary Embury mentioned seeing it at an event and organised something where a few of us went to Bristol City Council and took some live illustrated notes for a meeting. He was like, “You’re good at this! You should contact one of those companies.” So I did, and ended up getting my first live illustration job a week after finishing my course.

One of a handful of B’s live illustrations he did with us (before we changed our name to Illustrated Live) for the client Juno Women’s Aid.

2. Tell us something you have learned about the benefits of live illustration since you became a live scribe.

It was doing a couple of jobs (pictured above) for Juno Women’s Aid with Illustrated Live, and realising just how helpful they can be for organisations receiving and applying for funding to have that eye-catching visual takeaway of what they’ve done, what is important to them going forward. It helps to get them more attention.

3. What do you believe sets visual learning apart from other learning styles?

Images can really help jog start your memory (just how flashcards work!). Not just in terms of remembering something interesting or important that was said. They can also help you remember the feeling of being in that room and being part of a conversation, which is something integral if you’re working towards making some kind of change.

4. Why do you think clients should choose live illustration for their next event?

It’s memorable, more fun than note taking, creates a talking point for everyone, and is a fantastic visual road map to look back at and see where you’ve come from.

5. How would you describe live illustration in one word or one sentence?

It’s a sound: the classic chef’s kiss. Belissimo!

Curious to see what remote live illustration could bring to your next event? We’d love to hear more about your event plans and see if we can help. Who knows… maybe B will end up being your scribe!
