Why Hiring a Live Event Illustrator is the Secret Weapon Your Brand Activation is Missing
A Stat That Should Make Every Brand Manager Sit Up
Here's something worth knowing before your next event budget conversation:
91% of consumers say they feel more positive about a brand after actively participating in a brand experience.

And when that participation involves watching something beautiful being made - right in front of them, just for them - that feeling goes through the roof!
That's exactly what a live event illustrator brings to your activation. I'm Katie (a professional event illustrator based in the UK) and I travel worldwide to create live artwork at brand events, corporate gatherings, and product launches - everything from personalised portraits and custom product painting to large-scale window murals that stop a room in its tracks.
This blog is your guide to what a live event illustrator actually does, why smart marketing managers are adding one to their briefs, and what it looks like in practice with some of the world's biggest brands.
1. So, What Does a Live Event Illustrator Actually Do?
Basically, I create personalised artwork live at your event, while your guests watch.
That might mean drawing a portrait of a guest in a few minutes, painting a brand message directly onto a product, creating illustrated takeaway cards for 130 influencers, or filling a two-storey window with a hand-painted mural that becomes the centrepiece of your entire event.
The magic is in both the artwork itself and the moment of creation. Guests gather to watch, they chat, they film. It becomes a focal point, a conversation starter, and a genuinely memorable experience, all at once. In a world where events compete hard for attention and recall, live illustration is something people don't forget.
2. Types of Live Illustration Services
Live Guest Portraits
Quick, flattering, and endlessly interactive - live portraits are a crowd favourite. Guests love watching their likeness appear on the page, and they inevitably share the results on social. For brand activations, this works beautifully because it creates a natural flow of engagement around the illustrator's table, keeping guests interested and on-site longer.
Portraits created for a leadership offsite - these were given as gifts in a small frame for Meta EMEA directors after their London offsite
We also created graphic recording of the meeting content itself for Metaβs leadership offsite.

Custom Product Painting
Imagine watching an artist personalise your product in real time - your name, a message, a bespoke design. This is a premium experience that feels genuinely special. It works brilliantly for luxury gifting moments, VIP activations, and any brand that wants its product to feel like a one-of-a-kind keepsake rather than merchandise.
Large-Scale Live Illustrations
For maximum visual impact, nothing beats a large-scale live illustration - whether that's a dramatic window painting or a live event mural being created throughout your event. Guests can check in on its progress, photograph it at different stages, and feel part of something. By the time it's finished, it's both a centrepiece and a story.
You can find out more about this on the live mural painting page.
3. Why Choose Live Illustration for Your Event?
It creates a genuine keepsake
There's a big difference between branded swag that ends up in a drawer and personalised artwork that someone actually hangs on their wall or keeps on their desk. Live illustration creates the latter. Guests carry their artwork home, and with it, they carry the memory of your brand β and research backs this up: 64% of consumers hold onto positive impressions of brands for a month or more after a brand activation.
It's social media gold
Live artwork is inherently watchable and shareable. Whether guests are filming the process or posting their finished piece, you get organic social content that feels authentic rather than staged. For influencer events in particular, this is invaluable.
It sparks conversation
A live event illustrator draws a crowd β naturally and effortlessly. It breaks the ice, creates dwell time, and gets guests talking to each other. That's especially valuable at corporate events or leadership gatherings where the mood can sometimes feel a little stiff.
It fits almost any event format
Brand activations and product launches
Corporate events, conferences, and leadership away days
Influencer events and press days
Private parties, weddings, and celebrations
Retail pop-ups and experiential marketing campaigns
And because I'm based in the UK but work worldwide, logistics are never a barrier. I work with a brilliant network of fellow event illustrators, so even if Iβm not available, I can help you find someone who is perfect for your event.
4. Live Illustration in Action:
Nespresso: An Event Illustrator Personalising 240 Mugs, One Name at a Time π
For a Nespresso brand activation, I painted personalised designs onto customer mugs live at the event. We're talking 240 mugs - my studio was stacked floor to ceiling in the lead-up, and I roped in friends to help with the pre-painting. It was worth it for the reactions we got on the day! Nespresso customers were genuinely buzzinβ to receive something made just for them.
"Working with Katie this year was such an inspiration. She's not only a brilliant professional, but an absolute joy to collaborate with. I really hope we get to work together again."

Dove: A Two-Storey Window, 130 Takeaway Cards, and a Room Full of Beauty Influencers
Dove's influencer event in London was built around their plastics commitment - a complex, data-heavy message that needed to land visually and emotionally for an international audience where English wasn't always a first language. My brief included three elements: a pre-made illustration showing Dove's plastic impact data, a large-scale live illustration bringing their 'Better, Less, No Plastic' approach to life, and personalised illustrated cards for all 130 attendees.
The window itself was about two metres wide and three to four metres tall β and I completed it in a single afternoon. The atmosphere in the room was brilliant: beauty influencers everywhere, snapping photos and sharing to their Instagram stories alongside custom animated GIF stickers that had been specially commissioned for the event. The illustration became the natural backdrop for everything, and the takeaway cards gave every influencer something genuinely personal to post and keep.
Meta/Facebook: 20 Portraits for MEA Leadership Offsite
For a Meta EMEA leadership meeting, I created 20 individual portraits - one for each director attending. The portraits were presented as part of a bespoke gift and goodie bag, and the reaction was exactly what you'd hope for: squeals of delight. There's something about receiving a piece of personalised artwork. It cuts through in a way that branded merchandise simply can't.
5. How to Book Your Live Event Illustrator
Booking is straightforward, and I always start with a conversation to understand your event, your guests, and what you want people to feel and take away. From there, we work out the format that best fits your brief - portraits, product painting, live mural, illustrated cards, or a combination.
I offer flexible packages depending on the scale of your event, the number of guests, and any bespoke elements involved. I'm based in the UK and work worldwide, so whether your event is in London, Amsterdam, New York, or Dubai, we can make it happen.

6. Tips for a Smooth Live Illustration Experience
Venue setup and lighting
Good lighting is everything for live illustration - ideally natural daylight, or warm artificial light that doesn't cast harsh shadows. Think about where the illustrator's table or easel will be positioned: somewhere guests will naturally drift past works much better than a corner. A slightly elevated setup can also help guests see the work in progress.
Allow time in the run of show
Live illustration works best when guests have unstructured time to gather, watch, and chat. If your event is very tightly scheduled, it's worth building in some free-flow time around the illustration element so guests can enjoy the process rather than watching in passing.
Engage with your event illustrator
The more context I have about your guests, your brand values, and the feeling you want to create, the better the work will be. A pre-event call or briefing document goes a long way - and if there are specific design references, brand colours, or messaging to incorporate, sharing those early means everything is polished and on-brand on the day.
7. Ready to Add Something Truly Memorable to Your Next Event?
Live illustration is a genuinely effective tool for creating the kind of brand experience that guests talk about afterwards, share online, and remember for years. It's personal, it's visual, it's interactive, and it leaves people with something they'll properly treasure.
Whether you're planning a brand activation, a corporate away day, an influencer event, or a private celebration, I'd love to hear about it! Get in touch to chat through your brief - and let's create something brilliant together.
