What is live illustration? A novel idea to boost engagement at your online event.
I wanted to create this blog post to answer some of my most commonly asked questions, namely:
What is a live illustrator?
What is graphic recording?
What's a live scribe?
What are sketch notes?
People have so many questions and they don't actually know what I do. So this hopefully will clear it all up for you!
My name's Katie Chappell, and I'm a live illustrator and welcome to my studio. I'm based in Northumberland and the North East of England. And I work for clients all over the world. In 2020 alone, I've worked for Facebook, Google, Apple, lots more.
Creating meeting illustrations over Zoom
Online events and live illustration
Since the start of the Corona Virus COVID19 pandemic, I've been working 100% online so I can join meetings anywhere in the world and illustrate in real-time to get the key points across in a way that's
- Really accessible for visual learners,
- Engaging for people who are bored out of their mind
- And for anybody who's got zoom fatigue, because if you are a human in 2020 doing business, you've probably been very bored in a zoom meeting.
Ok, but is graphic recording in my online event going to be really distracting?
Something that people worry about a lot, is that if the attendees can see me drawing for the whole meeting, is that going to be really distracting?
And that's a really, it's a good point because it can be distracting.
A brilliant solution: the live illustration sandwich
The top slice of bread:
Most of my clients announce at the beginning of the meeting that there's a live illustrator present.
The filling:
And then if there's a comfort break, a coffee break, they'll check in with the meeting illustration so far. It’ll be displayed like a screensaver for the coffee break.
The bottom slice of bread:
Finally, they'll check-in at the end as like a grand reveal.
People love the frequent peeks at the artwork - it works really well to re-engage people, to bring them back in, if they've sort of started multitasking and zoned out.
So if you're thinking like 'this sounds cool, Katie, but am I going to distract people when I really need them to listen?'. That's the live illustration sandwich is a really good way around that.
Graphic Recording is 6 x More Impactful than an online event with no images
When live illustration images are involved with your live meeting or online event, it's proven that people will remember six times more information than if there were no images.
So by hiring a live illustrator, you're engaging and connecting with so many more people and really helping them absorb the important information.
The time-lapse video that I offer means that you can condense one hour of meeting into one minute. So if I'm illustrating for 90 minutes, it's a 90-second video. This one was a 90-minute meeting and you can see the whole illustration taking shape.
You don't have to sit there for an hour and a half getting a numb bum, wishing you weren't on the internet.
Video is a really powerful way to share the information from your webinar or online event with attendees afterwards. Email this live illustration video timelapse to them as an explainer video. Put it on your social media channels to keep everybody informed.
A Live Illustration timelapse = efficient content repurposing.
So I'm going to leave it there. If you've got any questions at all, come and say hi!
I'm more than happy to jump on a call and discuss it in depth. I even have a snazzy ‘book a call’ button, and you can bring the whole team along to see how live illustration could work for you and your company.
